The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

For the last term, my class has been reading a book called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. We had some questions to answer before we read the book like what we thought the book is about. Now we are answering questions about how we thought the book was.

  • What were your thoughts after reading the ending? What do you think will happen to Christopher?
Comparing what he was like at the start of the book to the end of the book I think that there was a really big difference in the way that he acts. At the start, he was scared to go out by himself and he would not do a lot of stuff. After he had been to his mother's place and then moved back to do his A-level math test a lot had changed because he went on a train by himself and when he was away he had to cope with a lot of things that he didn't like. I think that Christopher will go on to get a career that involves some sort of maths because he is very smart and even though he is still scared of a lot of things he has overcome them once so I think he would be able to overcome them again.

  • What was your favorite funny moment from the novel?
?
  • Look at the following statement and decided whether you agree or disagree with it. Explain your answer.  "The Novel is funny because we are laughing at Christopher".
I disagree with this statement because I don't think we were laughing directly at Christopher maybe some of the things he did were funny but I did not think that there were many things Christopher did to make you laugh at him.

  • Did you find this novel sad?
I did not find this book very sad but there were a couple of sad moments throughout the book. There were two main points in the book that I found sad and they were when Christopher found out that his father had killed the neighbor's dog and that his mother was still alive but his father was hiding all of the letters that she was sending.

  • What do you think Mark Haddon is saying about why there are so many different reactions to the book? What was your response to the book?
I think that the way he has written the book made it so that people can have mixed feelings about it because of the different ways that people think. This means that some people think some parts are happy and other people think they are sad but what he is trying to say is a lot of parts in the book can both be happy and sad moments it just depends on how you see it.

  • In what way do you think the book appeals to teenagers?
  • In what way do you think the book appeals to adults?
  • Some people have said that the book is not very suitable for teenagers because it contains a lot of swearing and because it deals with a depressing matter. Do you agree? why?
I think that these questions can also relate back to how different people feel about the story because teenagers might see the story a lot differently from an adult. Teenagers will most likely understand how Christopher is feeling more than adults but adults might understand more about the parents than teenagers do.
I think that this book is suitable for older teenagers around the age of 14 and up because of all of the swearing and some of the things that happen in the book.

  • Why do you think that Mark Haddon chose to write the story from a first-person point of view?
I think that he has written the novel like this so that people can understand what it is like for Christopher and understand how he is feeling all the time.

  • How has he tried to overcome some of the disadvantages?
I think that he did a really good job at handling some of the disadvantages he had throughout the story. Since he does not like being around a lot of people when he was on the train he found a place very quiet and sat there do the number game in his head to keep him distracted from evderything else around him.
