Protein In Foods Experiment (Science)

In science our new topic is food and digestion. The other day we did an experiment by putting different foods in a beaker and putting copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide. We did this to try and see what food had complex and what food had protein in it and what didn't. The things that we used were Milk, Butter and Egg White.

Aim: To test a sample of food contains protein

Equipment: Test Tube, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), Copper Sulfate (CuSO), food sample.

Method: 1. Place about 2 mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
              2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate into the test tube.
              3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side and watch to see if anything happens.

Results: If the solution remains blue then no protein is in that food. But if the solution turns to a purple colour then there is protein in the food.

What's In My Meal? (Science)

For the last couple of days in science we have been working with a pair to make a poster about what is in our food. First we had to pick what meal we were going to look at me and my partner choose scrambled eggs. First we had to sort the ingredients into different food groups like Fibre, Carbohydrates and lipids/ dairy products. We then had to right down how to make it.Hope you enjoy.

Social Study's Communism In North Korea

For the last couple of weeks in social study's we have been learning about government. Some things that we have been learning about are Dictators, Communism, democracy and monarchy. I chose to learn about communism in North Korea. Below is a slide show with some information about North Korea I still need to add in a little bit of information. Hope you enjoy.

New Zealand Government
In New Zealand we have a democracy. This democracy lets us have the right to vote at the age of 18 for whatever party we want in. It also lets us speak freely about what we think witch means that we can strike about what we think is right.

Eye Dissection

This week in science we have been learning about how your eye works. For an experiment we got to dissect a cow eye.

Aim: To find out all of the different parts of the eye.

Method: At the start of the experiment we had to cut all of the bits of fat and the muscle that was still on the side of the eye. We then used the mini knife to poke the middle of the cornea(To protect the eye) to get the liquid out (Vitreous Humor) of it so we could do some more stuff. We then used the tweezers and the mini knife to open it up more and try to get the pupil(It lets all the light in) and the lens( Focuses the light) out. After we did that we cut the eye in half so that we could see all of the other peaces in the eye. When we cut the eye in half some of the things we saw were retina(receive light that the lens has focused) and iris(Controls the size of the pupil). Then we cleaned up the mess that we had made.

Warning Graphic Content!!

Results:

There are some of the photos from our experiment.

What I learnt: I learnt that there is a liquid inside your eye called Vitreous Humor.
Do you know anything else about an eye?
