Protein In Foods Experiment (Science)

In science our new topic is food and digestion. The other day we did an experiment by putting different foods in a beaker and putting copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide. We did this to try and see what food had complex and what food had protein in it and what didn't. The things that we used were Milk, Butter and Egg White.

Aim: To test a sample of food contains protein

Equipment: Test Tube, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), Copper Sulfate (CuSO), food sample.

Method: 1. Place about 2 mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
              2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate into the test tube.
              3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side and watch to see if anything happens.

Results: If the solution remains blue then no protein is in that food. But if the solution turns to a purple colour then there is protein in the food.
