English Coggle Task

 Last week in English we had the choice between four different task and we had to work on them throughout the week. The task I choose was the coggle and I had to pick four characters in the movie and give one problem that they face during the movie. I then had to say how they dealt with this. I thought that this was going to be easy at first but then I found that I could only think of Katniss and Peeta so it took me a while to think about who else I could write about. I eventually came up with Prim Rose and Gale to write but I still struggled to think of a problem that they had because they are not the main characters.

English Workshop 5 / Music

Reaping Scene:
Major/Minor: Minor
Tempo-Fast/Slow/Moderate: Moderate
Dynamics: The volume went all the way up and then went down. (Starts quiet, gets louder to build tension/intensity then dies down again.
Effect On Viewer: Hopeful, Scared, Anxious.
Why Did The Directer To This: Put us in the shoes of the children in District 12.

Rues Farewell:
What Happens In This Scene?: Puts Rue to rest, she died,. was speared through the chest, we were not happy about this, mainly sad.

Tempo: Slow
Dynamics: Diminuendo- Starts loud ends quieter.
Effect On Viewer: Depressed, sorrowful, melancholic.
Why Did The Director Do This: Because someone just died, she was close with Katniss, Katniss is the main character, Katniss cares because Rue is a child and reminds her of Prim.

Paragraph: In the scene where Rue dies, the technique of music is used effectively to show the theme of 'Hope and Rebellion'. In this scene we see Rue put to rest after she is impaled with a spear by another tribute. The music that is used makes the audience feel depressed, sorrowful, and melancholic through the use of minor chords, slow tempo and rising and falling dynamics. The purpose of this is to show the relationship between Katniss and Rue. They are friends and Katniss sees Rue like her sister Prim. This worked well with the use of the three finger salute which is a symbol of hope from Katniss's district. This shows hope and rebellion because as a result ok Katniss's actions, the people of district of District 11 start rioting against the Peace Keepers.

Paragraph: In the film The Hunger Games by Gary Ross lighting is used effectively to show the difference between District 12 and The Capitol. in District 12 we see mainly brown, green, grey, these are natural colours. In the Capitol we see artificial, vibrant colours. This makes us understand that the Capitol has the privileged of technological lighting. The director did this to show the theme "Rich vs Poor". The power of the Capitol, over District 12, is shown through the use of futuristic technology. The lack of opportunity in District 12 is highlighted by their lack of modern technology. Lighting in each location can be compared to the possibility of hope and rebellion in each setting.

Picture 1: The people in District 12 are waiting to find out who is going to be reaped.

Describe: Clothes are old and worn, the colours are faded because of how much they wash them they have dark colours so the coal does not stain them. At the reaping they wear there best clothes because they are being watched by the Capitol and other Districts don't want to look as poor as they are. Boys are wearing button up shirts, suspenders, trousers and shorts. The girls are wearing dresses or skirts, the length is past there knees but not any longer. Most of the girls have there hair really tidy and the boys have it nice as well. No one has any accessories because they are not needed and they don't have the money to buy it anyway.

Viewer Perspective: They are poor, they don't have enough money to buy the basics. They want to be seen as equal not as just dirty coal miners.

Why Did The Director Do It?: To show the differences between people in the capitol and all of the others districts. The capitol has wealth and privilege, their clothes are nicer, they have a lot more stuff available, they can get stuff that actually fits them.

Techniques: The camera angle is a wide shot witch shows lots of people crammed together. There is also a high angle which makes subjects make weak and vulnerability which emphasises that power of the capitol of the districts.

Picture 2: When Katniss and Peeta arrive in the capitol people are waiting for them.

Costumes: Colourful, immaculate, exotic, co-ordinate, variety. Women usually wear dresses, different styles but on the same bright colour palette. Men wear suits, skirts. Accessories- Dyed dogs, headgear, handbags, gloves, earrings, make-up. The accessories are not limited to one gender.

Effect On Viewer: That they are wealthy - not poor, they have privileged- born into a wealthy family and they don't have to work.

Director Purpose: To highlight the luxuries of the capital.

Techniques: Setting- Light, modern architecture, stones, Metal, steel, fresh, new, futuristic.

Paragraph 1: in the name of the reaping scene, costumes are used effectively to show 'Rich Vs Poor'. in this case, 'Rich Vs Poor' means the privileges afforded to people in panam based on there district. This is demonstrated by the clothing worn by the residents of District 12 during the annual reaping. The clothes are uniform like, well worn and bland colours. The boys wear button up collar shirts and shorts or trousers whilst the girls wear skirts or dresses. These are example of there best clothing which tells us that they are poor and limited to what they can access. This makes the audience think that although they are poor and can only afford the basics they want to be seen as respectable by the capitol and other districts not just as coal miners. This was done to show the differences between the capitol and the other districts- the capitol has wealth and privilege whilst the people in the districts have to make do. This worked well with the use of camera angles. In this shot a high angle wide shot is used to show that people of District 12 are weaker and more vulnerable under the power of those of the Capitol. This can be juxtaposed to the use of costumes in the capitol where we see 'Rich Vs Poor' through the extravagance and luxuries of the citizens costumes.

English SEXXXY Paragraph

This week in English we had to pick a picture from the film 'The Hunger Games'. For the last two workshops we have been learning how to do SEXXY Paragraphs so this week we had to write one on our own. I choose to write about the Medium Shot and what happens in this scene.

Medium Shot

                                                                                 

In the scene where Katniss finds Peeta, She starts to try to stitch up his pants to try and cover the wound. The camera shot they used was called a Medium Shot and it is used when two people are usually having a conversation and is big enough to fit two people in. In this scene it shows the theme ‘Propaganda’. In this scene Katniss is going along the river and sees Peeta camouflage into the rocks with a wound in his leg she then helps him up and takes him somewhere safe where she can help him. The shot is also slightly above them as if someone was standing up and looking down at them.This makes the audience think that the camera could be in a tree which means that they made there way from the river to the forest. It could also make the people watching feel more powerful because from there perspective they are standing above Katniss and Peeta. The clothes that they are wearing shows more privilege than what the clothes in district 12 did. These clothes are much cleaner and seem to be new. The author has done this to show that there is a bond growing between Katniss and Peeta for example, Katniss had the chance to just kill Peeta there when he was weak but she chose to help him somewhere safe where she could tend to his leg.  Overall, this scene shows ‘Propaganda’ because at first Katniss did not really care about Peeta but overtime she has found out that she really does care about him.

English Work Shop 2

Picture: lower angle- make the subject look bigger or more powerful, dutch tilt- to show katniss emotional feeling, mid shot- to show some face expressions body language and the background.
What is happening in this shot?: Katniss has volunteered as tribute in the Hunger Games where most will probably die. She volunteered because her sister was picked and she didn't want her to die.
Themes: Struggle for Power- It shows that Katniss and Primrose are helpless against the reaping, that the district children are going to be killed.
Rich vs Poor: Clothing- Effie Trinket is dressed nicely while Katniss is in cheap run down, well worn clothing. Effie is immune to the reaping because she is from the capitol whilst Katniss and the children of the District are scared of it. Shows privilege because those int he capitol don't have to be reaped for the games.
Hope and Rebellion: Seen through the 4 finger salute when Katniss has finished speaking- becomes a symbol of rebellion later the story bit is first time we see it, sued almost in mourning. Also, Katniss is becoming a figure of Hope for the people in D12.
How do we feel: Dizzy- put in Katniss shoes, sad for Katniss, worried because she has a low chance of winning, Admire her for taking her sisters place.
Why did the director do this?: Till this point we know she hunts and supports her family, she can sue a bow. Volunteers to save her sister tells us that she cares about her family- Selfless. Knowing that she can already hunt- she might not die int he games, As an audience we start to understand her and care about her.
Paragraph:
In the reaping scene, camera angles and shots are used effectively to show the theme 'Rich Vs Poor'. In this scene Katniss volunteers as tribute ,in place of her sister, to fight in the Hunger Games. A low angle, dutch tilt is used to show Katniss and Effie standing on the stage after Katniss volunteers. This is used to make the viewer feel dizzy like Katniss who has just risked her life for her family. The low angle shot makes the viewer feel weak and vulnerable like the children watching from District 12. The director did this to help the audience form a bond with Katniss and understand why she will make the choices sh does further in the film. It also shows the theme of 'Rich vs Poor' because the people of the districts have ti struggle with the realities of being reaped for the games, whilst Capitol citizens like Effie are immune and see it as honer and entertainment. Combined with this is the use of costumes. We see the privilege of Capitol citizens in the bright, exotic and colourful clothing worn by Effie which contrasts to the worn and faded outfits of those in District 12. Overall, the reaping scene shows us 'Rich vs Poor' because it emphasises the privileges of the Capitol and the power they have over the Districts. 
    

English Work

For the last two weeks in English we have been working on film study. For the first week we watched the movie called the hunger games. The first time that we watch it we watch it for enjoyment but the second time we watch certain parts of the movie and then write the key points of that scene as is seen in one of my previous blog posts. We watch the certain parts so that when we do the essay it is easier to write about since we know more. 

English Film Study (Hunger Games)

District 12 Overview: Quite a run down place, Lots of dead trees, no lush and green grass, Houses have holes in walls, Broken windows, the boards to there houses are decaying. There clothes are very boring lots have lots of wear and and just a very dull blue or just grey. They are also always making sure that they get all of the food off of bones or any food they are eating.
What Is The Capitol Like: People wear very bright colours like, pink, blue, purple and yellow. They also wear lots of make-up and have Jewry. They wear lots of tuxedos and dresses but unlike the dresses they wear in district 12 they are a lot cleaner and fancier. The buildings them-self are very different to district 12 because they have stone buildings and water fountains around the place. It is a very clean place you don't see much if any rubbish around and you see around the area there are lots of living plants.
Reaping Scene: Most of the females have to have their hair tied nicely, both male and female must have their shirts tucked in. When someone is picked everyone turns to look at the person and then the person who has been choose who would be very shocked slowly walks up to the stage. There are lots of guards standing around the people to make sure nothing happens. They picks one peace of paper each out of a bowl and male and female and prim rose (Katniss sister) was chosen. When someone is chosen the film goes very quiet so quiet that you can hear her unfold the paper and you can hear prim roses foot steps on the gravel. after that the film starts to move very slowly. Before the people are chosen they watch a video on why the hunger games happen. There are lots of different shots and it keep swapping from the announcer Effie trinket to the crowd of people.
"TV Show" In Capitol: Again lots of people and all of them are wearing very bright and fancy outfits. They have lots of lights at the TV show and all of the screens on the wall which in district 12 the only colour that they now are very dull and grey colours.
Rues Death And Riot Scene: The camera is moving very slow and there are a lot of close ups on rue and Katniss. The music is very sad and then once katniss does the three finger salute it turn to dramatic music and the camera is shaking a lot. You hear a lot of things crashing down and all of the windows. You also hear all of the soldiers marching down the street.
Eating The Poisonous Berry's At The End: When they find out that only one person can wind they both start to move very slowly and and music is again very slow and sad. The camera shots change a lot like they show close ups on the berry's as well as katniss and peeta face. Also when they are told only one person can win katniss has already got her bow ready before she turned around thinking that peeta was ready to kill her as well.
Shooting Apple Out Of Pigs Mouth: The angles that they use show that katniss is lower than them and that the people in the booth have lots of lights and they have food. They also show that the spectators don't really care and they laugh at katniss when she misses the first shot with the bow. She then starts to concentration and then some unknown music starts playing she shoots hit it in the middle but nobody is paying attention. So she then shoots the apple out of the pigs mouth which stuns them and all of the music stops and changes to the high angle because they are now looking back at her. It also does a close up on the pig showing that the apple is pinned agents the wall.
What can people do in district 12 to get more food? Katniss uses her bow to kill birds, deer and mostly squirrels. She can then trade this in for either money or more food. Some other family's that don't know how to hunt get paid from there jobs if they have one and then they uses the money to buy food. For other family's that don't have someone who can hunt or does not have a job they can go in and take some extra rations so food, drinks, oil any thing they need. The down side to this is when they do that their name gets added into the pick an extra time so they have more chances of being picked.

Unwind Questions Part 4 (Destination)

1. This section opens with Lev in a pawnbroker's. What does this tell you about how his character is changing? He is not brain washed anymore and he is starting to get more aggressive so that he can survive.
2. While being transported to possible safety, some of the kids on the run wonder, "Would it be better to die or be unwound?" If given the choice, which would you choose? Why? This response requires more than one or two sentences! Put forward at least three reasons why you think what you do. I woudl rather die then be unwound because for the first reaons it just feels weird to know that all of your body parts would go to other people. Another reaons is because you can die at any age usally from old age but if you get unwwound you die between 14 and 18.
3. Another question the kids in the book discuss is, "If every part of you is still alive but inside someone else, are you alive or are you dead?" They also wonder if consciousness can exist even if it's spread out, and if the soul remains intact. What do you think? Read Thomas Hobbes' Ship of Theseus puzzle to help you make a decision. Be sure to reference it in your answer!http://metaphysicist.com/puzzles/ship_theseus/ I do not think that you are still alive because in my opinion to be alive you need to have all of your organs together and you need to have a heart and brain. But when your body parts are in someone else they are not really connected to you anymore.  
4. This section of the novel sees Lev and Cy-Fi finally make it to Joplin. As they get closer, Cy-Fi's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. What are some of the things he does, or things he likes, that are not his own behaviours or memories? He likes anything that is shiny and if he sees something shiny he will take it. this is because of the part of his brain that he was given so this tells me that the brain he got must of stolen stuff.
5. What was Cy-Ty hiding in his backyard? Pg 185-194 He was hiding in his backyard because he was not sure if his parents were going to just hand him in or if they were going to be nice to him and let him stay with them. 
6. The section ends with Cy-Ty reaching his destination. What do you think of his parents' behaviour? What does Lev's support show you about his character? Its shows that lev is changing a lot ever since pastor Dan told him that he does not want him to get unwound. He has became a lot more aggressive and we were shown that when he was threatening the parents to tell Cy-Ty that they would not unwind him.

Unwind Questions Part 3 (Transit)

1. In the course of the book, Connor and Risa get separated from Lev, who travels for a time with another character. Why do you think Shusterman chose to split the narrative into two distinct threads? What do you think this achieves? How does this affect the evolution of the characters? It affects the other because since they are both thinking how the others are doing they will be getting distracted and think if the other have been caught and unwound or if they are fine.  
2. On p125 & 129  the novel touches on same-sex relationships. Has the attitude toward same-sex couples changed (for better or worse) in this futuristic society? Explain your response. Lev says that he has heard of it before but in his head all of that stuff is a part of a different universe. So in this world im not sure if it has changed for better or worse I guess it could be better because it could be better because people don't mind same sex couples.  
3. P130 begins our journey into understanding a little more about Cy-Fi. Through his character, what do you learn about the effects of unwinding on both the donor and receiver? If you get a part of someone elses body mostly the brain they are still there and tell people what to do depending what part of the brain or part of the body it is. Cy-Fi says that someone is telling him to take anything that is shinny so he does. He also said that he got a peace of someone who had been unwound.  
4. What is the real reason Cy-Fi need to get to Joplin, Mo? Pg 131. It does not really say the reason why he is leaving and going to Joplin all that we are told is that they are going there but we don't have a reason yet.  
5. What is the significance of Connor holding in his anger around Roland? Pg 147. It shows that he is listening to Risa and taking her advice to not take the bait. Which is good because Roland is starting to think that Conner really does not care. 
6. Connor's anger and lack of impulse control is often a problem for him, until he learns to control and channel his emotions. Do you ever feel like your impulses are stronger than your will? What strategies do you use to control your feelings? Do they work? Some ways that I change the way that I am feeling is I try to think about something else or something that makes me happy. I also can just go and talk to some of my Friends or family if I need help with anything. 

Unwind Questions Part 2 (Storked)

1. What is the story based on a nursery rhyme that circulates among the youth? Humphrey Dumfee (Humpty Dumpty)
2. Risa overhears two nurses debating law and human nature. Which argument do you think is the stronger? Why do you think this? Write a paragraph explaining your thoughts on law and human nature. I think that you can not change human nature with out first changing the law. I think this because it would be annoying if you were about to do something and then you find out that there is now a law that you cant do it which is not fair because they have not told anyone.
3. This section opens with a mother abandoning her newborn infant on the doorstep of a house in a good neighbourhood. As she leaves, she thinks "How wonderful it is that she can get a second chance. How wonderful it is that she can dismiss her responsibility so easily." I think that this is not write because she will grow up not knowing who her mother or father is and if those people don't want the baby then it might just get passed from step to step so it is not a second chance at all.  
4. In your opinion, by allowing new mothers to give up their children so readily, does it take away from the value of a child? I think it does because that child will grow up and not know who there mother or fathers is which could then effect there learning because they might always be distracted and then if they get bad grades they will get unwound.  
5. What is the role of a mother? Do you think the title of mother is something that should be earned, or a natural right of the woman who gave birth? I think that it is something that should be earned because as we see in the book there are lots of mothers that are not ready and they just sit the babies on peoples doorsteps for others to take care of.  
6. What skills or attributes do Connor and Risa have that work well together? Risa was good with babies because she had to take care of some sometimes and Conner is good because he is pretty smart and he is also athletic.  
7. Connor and Lev have very different experiences with storking. How has this helped shape each of their attitudes toward the society they live in? Conner thinks that it is not right to stork babies which is why he went up to the baby on the step but then lev thinks it is ok. 
8. Connor is concerned the baby won't be loved, and ultimately will die, so he takes it. What does this show us about him as a person? He is very caring and he does not want the baby to just get passed around like the baby that was stroked on his street.  
9. What makes Lev realise he doesn't want to be unwound? When he calls pastor Dan he tells him that he was not telling him to run from Conner he was saying to run from them and thats when he realised that he did not wanted to be unwound. 
10. Each of the other characters on the run has a tragic background story. Why were Hayden, Roland and Mai set to be unwound? Which, do you think, is the most tragic? Explain your response. (Mai was getting unwound because her parents wanted a boy but they kept getting females so when they finally got a male they got rid of a lot of the females that they had.) (Hayden was sent to be unwound because his mother and father got divorced and they kept going to court over who had custody but it never got settled so they just divided to send him off.) (Roland got unwound because his stepfather abused his mum so one day he beat up his step father but then his mother took her husbands side and sent him off to be unwound.) I think that the most tragic one is Roland because he was trying to stick up for his mum but then she sent him off and the husband might still be treating her like that and there is no body to stick up for her.

Examining The Cover

How Do You Think The Story Will Be Written? I think it will be written from a third person perspective.

Why do I think the story is as entitled as it is. I get the idea that there is DNA on the front because when they get unwound they get DNA taken out.

Where do you think the story will take place? I thought ti would take place in a big city im not sure why it is just in my head it sounds like the unwinding factory would be big.

What time period do I think this was based around? I think think that it is based around the two thousands because it does not sound like there is much futuristic stuff there.

Exploring The Blurb

1. What do you already know about pro-life and pro-choice groups? What do these terms mean? Is it an issue you have thought about? Pro-Life: When someone thinks that women should not have the choice to keep or abort the baby. Pro-Choice: Is when abortion is a moral choice.
2. What do you know about organ donation? Organ donation is when someone who has Volunteered to give someone else on of there organs.
3. Teenagers to be unwound are sent to Harvest Camps. Can you make a connection between the language used to describe this place, and other places people have been sent historically? One thing that I can link is that when they go to the Harvest Camp none of the kids will leave the place alive because they are used there and they get there organs taken. 
4. What religious connotation does the word 'harvest' evoke? To em the word harvest reminds me of going and collecting something that has grown.
5. The term "living in a divided state" here is really a euphemism for what? Can you think of other, common euphemisms? Why do people use euphemisms? Living in a divided state is an euphemisms for being killed and your organs used for someone else.
6. What is the definition of legal? When something has been approved by the law. 
7. What about ethical? Something that is morally right.
8. Do you believe that because something is legal, it is also ethical, or morally right? No I don't a lot of laws might not be right.
9. Can things that are ethically sound ever be illegal? Provide examples. They could because someone could finally see the other side of it. 
10. Can you think of examples in history to support your ideas? Provide examples. I could not think of anything for this.

Part One-Triplicate

1.  How much brainwashing do you think has happened for teenagers to make this sort of claim as they’re being led to their "death"? From when they are born they are told that if you are getting unwound it is for a good cause and that they will be helping people.  
2. Why, do you think, has Shusterman chosen to have three characters tell their story? I think that it is good that they have told each persons story because we find out where they come from and what there back story is. 
3. Lev is a tithe. This means that he is the 10% that his family will give back to the church as an offering. What are your thoughts on this? I think that it is not right because his family have been telling him that he is doing something for god and they threw him a big party but I don't think he knows that he wont come back. 
4. Rita is a state home kid - she was unwanted at birth, and now the state have decided she is no longer useful. Do you think that the state should ever be able to determine if one life is more useful than another? No it is not fair because everyone should have a chance to do well in life. 
5. Connor's parents have chosen to unwind him due to his difficult behaviour. They have then booked a ticket to the Bahamas. In your opinion, how do parents view their children? Why do you think this? I think that they view the children as if they cant change once they make a mistake and once they have ordered the unwind they just try to forget about him. 
6. Pastor Dan presents as being conflicted. What reasons might he have to encourage Lev in his journey as a tithe? Why does he encourage him to run? Because pastor Dan understands what is really going to happen to him.

Creative Writing Matrix World Traveller

In English we have a slide that has a lot of different creative writing task on it. Each of them have a time limit on it so some can be has to be done in 1 period and some are 2 periods. For the one I picked you go to a random country generator and then you have to answer some questions about that country. The country that I got is Spain.

English Learning Goals

Last week in English my goal was to make sure to catch up on work that I am running behind on. I think that I did A good job at this I made sure to post everything I needed to and I finished all of the work that I had not finished. This week My learning goal is going to be ask for feed back from other students or the teacher when I am unsure about something in my work.
