Water Rockets

Today in science we made a plan of how we are going to make our water rocket, What fuel we would use for the water rocket and what things we had to put on the rocket. Here is the slide we have made.

Flight Aerodynamics

Aim: To look at the four main forces off flying and how these can be overcome.

Plane type
How does it behave?
Time ( secs)
Paper sheet, drop
It slowly drops to the ground.

1.26
Paper with fold down middle, drop
Drops to the ground faster.

2.3
Paper with fold and 1 paper clip, drop
Drops to the ground as soon as you let go.

1.5
Fold, 2 clips, rudder, drop
It dropped pretty fast

1.8
Fold, 2 clips, rudder throw
It fell a lot slower than the others

Flight Intro

Natural:          Man Made:
Dinosaurs       Rockets
Dragons         Jet
Bat                 Balloons
Bugs              Broom Stick
Birds              Paper Plane
                      Planes
                      Helicopter

Definitions:

Lift: The air pressure is greater underneath the wing than above and the aircraft / bird files.
Drag: The force than effects the speed of an aircraft / bird. It can slow it down.
Thrust: The forward movement of an aircraft / bird.
Gravity / Weight: The downward force of an abject when it is above earth.
Aerofoil: The shape of the wing on aeroplanes and some birds.
Bernoulli Effect: When a wing is in the shape of an Aerofoil the pressure builds up underneath it and it lifts the aeroplane up.

Activity 1: Your challenge is to hold a rectangular piece of paper close to your mouth, blow across the top of it and get the paper to move down. Sounds simple enough but give it a go and see if you change your mind.

What is happening? There is more pressure on the top of it s it want it lift up. This is called the Bernoulli effect.

Activity 2: Try and make a piece of paper into a simple bridge and get the bridge to rise up by blowing under it.

What is happening? The pressure is pushing it up

Hornby High School Presentation

This week we have had to make a presentation about Hornby High School to encourage parents to put there children in Hornby high school. In this slide I have talked about the four values that we have and why we have them. I have also explained about all the opportunities that we have at Hornby High School and why you should take some opportunities when you can. I have explained all of the sport that we do on Fridays and I have also put in about our Tuck Shop that we have at school. In the last couple of week we have been learning about our community and why we are apart of them. From this I have learned that Hornby is a really big community. At Hornby High there is still lots more subjects than I have said in this slide. I strongley recomened that you join Hornby High School now.

Science In The Early Maori

Science In The Early Maori

            Hunting:
Hunting is something that you do to catch food so that you can eat so that you will survive. To hunt in that time you would have to use spears and traps to catch the animals and all the food that you are going to need to survive.

To hunt you need to require a lot of skills so that you can catch your pray other wise they will run away and you wont be able to catch anything for you to eat.

Cooking:

To cook some times you used to dig a hole and put some stones in it. You would then put all the food on the stones and then put something over top of all the food. You would then cover it with all the dirt. After a couple of hours time you would then dig up the dirt and then the food would be cooked and ready to eat.

Fishing:
To fish you would put nets into the water leave them there for a we bit and then you would come back and if you were lucky sometimes you would get a couple of fish in your net. Another way that you could do it is you could get a rope and you would put a hock on the end of it throw it into the water with bait on it and sometimes you would get a bite and you would have a fish to eat.

Navigation

Maori would use the starts as a compass to find there way around. They would also use the wind. They would use the sun in the day time. They would use the tide to see how far in it is or how far out it is. They would also use the moon to find where to go.
